Summary

From debut author Stacy Willingham comes a masterfully done, lyrical thriller, certain to be the launch of an amazing career。 A Flicker in the Dark is eerily compelling to the very last page。

When Chloe Davis was twelve, six teenage girls went missing in her small Louisiana town。 By the end of the summer, Chloe’s father had been arrested as a serial killer and promptly put in prison。 Chloe and the rest of her family were left to grapple with the truth and try to move forward while dealing with the aftermath。

Now 20 years later, Chloe is a psychologist in private practice in Baton Rouge and getting ready for her wedding。 She finally has a fragile grasp on the happiness she’s worked so hard to get。 Sometimes, though, she feels as out of control of her own life as the troubled teens who are her patients。 And then a local teenage girl goes missing, and then another, and that terrifying summer comes crashing back。 Is she paranoid, and seeing parallels that aren't really there, or for the second time in her life, is she about to unmask a killer?

Although I don't read a lot of thrillers or mysteries, I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 I'll admit I didn't feel particularly drawn to the main character as a person - she made a lot of questionable decisions in her life that made it hard for me to relate to her, but I found her viewpoint in the story interesting, and it was easy to empathize with her at the very least。The narrative was well-written and easy to follow, and there weren't any noticeable errors or typos。 I do wish the author had giv Although I don't read a lot of thrillers or mysteries, I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 I'll admit I didn't feel particularly drawn to the main character as a person - she made a lot of questionable decisions in her life that made it hard for me to relate to her, but I found her viewpoint in the story interesting, and it was easy to empathize with her at the very least。The narrative was well-written and easy to follow, and there weren't any noticeable errors or typos。 I do wish the author had given us a little more time with each of the secondary characters - I feel like I didn't really get to know Chloe's father, mother, or brother very well… but on the other hand, I get it。 The viewpoint was very narrow, and it made it easy to be mislead by the author。I will say that I guessed the majority of the ending from very early on in the story, so I spent a lot of the story just waiting for it to be "revealed", but I didn't really mind it。 There were a few twists here and there, and the author did a good job of trying to throw the reader off with the addition of more characters and circumstances that weren't laid out clearly for the first half of the book。Overall, I liked the story。 I was sucked in by the mystery of the copy-cat killer and their relationship to Chloe and what had happened in her past, and it was nice to see a few bits of happy-ending peaking out in the final bits of the story。 If you enjoy murder mysteries and thrillers, I'd suggest you give this one a try。 。。。more

While I found this story entertaining, it was very predictable in many spots。 Even the twists seemed to be coming。 It was still a solid mystery debut。 Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for this copy for review

I had this book finished in just over a day! It hooks you in from the start and I didn't want to put it down! I had this book finished in just over a day! It hooks you in from the start and I didn't want to put it down! 。。。more

I listened to this debut novel billed as a thriller。 I found nothing thrilling about the tediously slow paced plot, completely predictable resolution, ridiculous scenes ((civilian witness asked to view corpse in morgue to see if anything different with the deceased - what?!?), and unlikeable protagonist。 I know I’m an outlier but, ugh。

What a great debut novel! While I did guess the killer very early on, the book definitely made me doubt my guess over and over again。 It had a lot of twists and the main character was very likable。 Very addicting read that I definitely could’ve read in one sitting if not for work and everything else haha。 Great read!

Very great book! So many twists and turns that caught me off guard。

Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5Audio: 🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧/5I was addicted to this book from the moment I started this。 Maybe it’s because I live in Louisiana, where the story takes place, maybe it was Karissa Vacker’s voice, which always reels me in。 Either way, the story flowed well, the characters well fleshed out。 I loved every。 Single。 Second。 So great。

3。5 stars。 There were some fun twists and turns but the "big reveal" was not a shock (but I have read lots of thrillers/mysteries)。 I'm on the lookout for one that will really surprise me! 3。5 stars。 There were some fun twists and turns but the "big reveal" was not a shock (but I have read lots of thrillers/mysteries)。 I'm on the lookout for one that will really surprise me! 。。。more

Okay so…I enjoyed this book, I really did。 Good character development, good background, good plot but I guessed the ending like 4 chapters in and that always is SUCH A LETDOWN。 However, it had me second guessing myself a couple times through the story。 Overall, I like the book。 I’ve read much worse and I’ve read much better but this is one of those ones where It wouldn’t surprise me if it turned into a Netflix series or something and have more success on that platform, if you get what I’m saying Okay so…I enjoyed this book, I really did。 Good character development, good background, good plot but I guessed the ending like 4 chapters in and that always is SUCH A LETDOWN。 However, it had me second guessing myself a couple times through the story。 Overall, I like the book。 I’ve read much worse and I’ve read much better but this is one of those ones where It wouldn’t surprise me if it turned into a Netflix series or something and have more success on that platform, if you get what I’m saying。 。。。more

I thought I knew who it was, then I thought I knew who it was, then I thought I finally knew who it was。。。 LOVED that creativity in continuing to be surprised! Not a huge fan of how frustrating and addicted Chloe was, even if it was a part of her character development。 I guess it was just to help paint her in a certain way, but my only real issue with the book。

Kept me wondering the whole time! Quick and easy read!

I couldn't wait to read this book after all the hype around。 Although I found it to be a good psychological thriller, I had the twist figured out early on。 I couldn't wait to read this book after all the hype around。 Although I found it to be a good psychological thriller, I had the twist figured out early on。 。。。more

Are thrillers really so predictable now, or do I just read too many of them?

3。9 I thought this was a good suspense story。 There are several would be outcomes that keep you guessing。 Can Chloe help solve the crimes committed 20 years ago? Or is she part of the problem。 This story takes place in Louisiana。 Chloe was 12 years old when her father confessed to being a serial killer。 However, it’s happening all over again。。is it a copy cat killer? You will fly through this book!

Dana

A mystery that was so obvious from the beginning。 The beginning of the book was so extremely slow I almost quit。 Then there were quite a few twist and turns which didn’t once sway me from my original prediction。 Not very memorable at all

3。5 Well-written and fast paced debut from Stacy Willingham。 Readers who frequent the Mystery/Thriller section will probably be able to guess the ending early on, however the story remains interesting and fun。

I thought I had this figured out early in the book (turns out I was partially right) but the author had me second guessing myself with every page。 A unique mystery/thriller, and one of the best ones I've read in the last year。 I thought I had this figured out early in the book (turns out I was partially right) but the author had me second guessing myself with every page。 A unique mystery/thriller, and one of the best ones I've read in the last year。 。。。more

A Flicker in the Dark has given me a lot of mixed feelings on how I feel about this book。 For a good portion of this book, I found it to be really one note as nothing was really happening and I’ll be honest, that it nearly (very, nearly) became my first DNF of the year。 However, I kept reading and I’m glad I did because the ending picks up and improves the book。My biggest pet peeve with the book is the main protagonist Chloe Davis kept making tons of decisions that came across as silly。 I felt l A Flicker in the Dark has given me a lot of mixed feelings on how I feel about this book。 For a good portion of this book, I found it to be really one note as nothing was really happening and I’ll be honest, that it nearly (very, nearly) became my first DNF of the year。 However, I kept reading and I’m glad I did because the ending picks up and improves the book。My biggest pet peeve with the book is the main protagonist Chloe Davis kept making tons of decisions that came across as silly。 I felt like she should have had a bit more fight and been a stronger character - she’s been through so much, and has made it out the other side。It’s an average, run of the mill thriller and sadly, wasn’t for me。 。。。more

I liked this book。 I felt like the reporter part of the story was kind of pointless though。

Chloe Davis has turned a bad situation into a good one。 After suffering a childhood traumatic experience with the arrest of his father for murdering six missing girls she has turned her life into one of doing good。 Chloe escaped her childhood town, graduated university and is now a psychologist helping young girls。 Close to the twentieth anniversary of her fathers arrest two girls go missing in her her town including one that was her patient。 It seems her past is seemingly back to haunt her。 Chl Chloe Davis has turned a bad situation into a good one。 After suffering a childhood traumatic experience with the arrest of his father for murdering six missing girls she has turned her life into one of doing good。 Chloe escaped her childhood town, graduated university and is now a psychologist helping young girls。 Close to the twentieth anniversary of her fathers arrest two girls go missing in her her town including one that was her patient。 It seems her past is seemingly back to haunt her。 Chloe starts to become suspicious of everyone she comes into contact with and life is spinning out of control。 The race is on to find the missing girls and find out who took them。 I had read many great reviews on this one prior to reading it and it did not disappoint at all。 I thought Chloe was a fantastic main character who certainly had her flaws but always believed in the good in people。 I also thought the writing was amazing and the story had many twists and turns that kept me guessing。 Every time I thought I had everything figured out I was completely wrong。 This is one I will be recommending to others and will remember for a long time。 。。。more

7/10。 I figured out the big missing piece early on, but this was fast-paced and hard to put down regardless。 There were also a few unexpected twists sprinkled in as well as info drops making me doubt my conclusion and red herrings that didn't add up。。。 until they did。 A fun read, if somewhat predictable。 7/10。 I figured out the big missing piece early on, but this was fast-paced and hard to put down regardless。 There were also a few unexpected twists sprinkled in as well as info drops making me doubt my conclusion and red herrings that didn't add up。。。 until they did。 A fun read, if somewhat predictable。 。。。more
